Generating your Lead Story…

What is it like to be a Recruiter in 2023?

Hiring Manager: Can you find us a unicorn?

Recruiter: Absolutely! We know the perfect candidate.

Hiring Manager: Perfect. Let's bring them in, but we'd also like to see 3 more candidates to compare.

Recruiter: We will definitely give it a try, but I have to be honest, it'll be tough to find 3 others that will work under the market rate with no benefits, only 2 weeks vacation, and in-office when it could be remote.

Hiring Manager: Well that's what it is. We will wait to interview until you have more than 1 candidate to show us.

*2 weeks later...*

Hiring Manager: Is the 1 unicorn you have still available?

Recruiter: No, they found another job. How many unicorns do you think exist?

While the hiring craze took off after Covid, unfortunately, the never-ending billing of clients hit a wall in 2023. This past year has shown us the ups and downs in the recruitment industry more than ever.

Here's a few reasons why:

Hiring overall slowed down tremendously as the economy's recession and inflation held employers hostage. This led to a wave of Talent Acquisition Specialists and Recruiters beginning to lose their jobs one after another.

Additionally, last year we were introduced to the term "quiet quitting." The idea is that rather than employees quitting their jobs, they are quitting the idea of going above and beyond for their employer because they are unhappy with one or more aspects of their job. This trend took the recruitment world by storm. It gave new recruiters a false sense of hope that the trajectory of their careers would only soar as candidates were open and ready to make lateral moves for more money.

We then had to face the next level of competition: AI. ChatGPT, which stands for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is a language model-based chatbot developed by OpenAI, which enables users to refine and direct a conversation towards a desired length, format, style, level of detail, and language used. This powerful writing assistant was quickly introduced as an instant resume builder, levelling the playing field in some professions, while eliminating careers in others.

2023 isn't over yet, but for those in the recruiting industry there is light at the end of the tunnel, and I believe in Q4 the bounce-back will be better than the setback.

Shortlisted Tips & Trends

How to successfully onboard your new hire after Labour Day:

  • Foster connections: Continue the conversation after they've signed your offer and be sure to introduce them to the team and appropriate stakeholders.

  • Personalize your process: Cater learning materials, meetings, and training sessions to your new hire’s specific role and individual needs.

  • Allocate time in your calendar: Design and organize their schedule before your new hire starts. Preparation is key!

  • Streamline the process: Share online learning and gamification tools to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and to maximize efficiency.

  • Provide a designated work space: Give your new hire a safe place to work with access to security systems (if required) and make sure they receive company equipment on day one (computer, chargers, monitor, phone, etc.).

"3 years ago, I was in my final stage of a 5 round interview process. That's 5 rounds on top of the initial phone screening, with a take-home project and presentation. I was expecting my final interview to be a formality interview, where they bring in a top executive to help determine and/or sign off on the chosen candidate. This was not that. Instead, I was asked to role play with the interviewer by communicating as aliens to try to make food. Yes - aliens. While I can recognize that this may help demonstrate creative communication skills and how one might react under pressure, what I cannot get past is how far off this comedy bit was from the role I was interviewing for. Looking back on this interview, it was nothing more than a charade."
