Giving the Green Light to LinkedIn's Green Banner

Finding a job can be challenging for various reasons. The job market's competitiveness, evolving job requirements, and economic fluctuations all play a role. Additionally, the process can be daunting due to factors like a mismatch between job seekers' skills and employers' needs, the time required to secure a suitable position, and the uncertainties surrounding job applications. Furthermore, job searches often demand significant effort, from customizing resumes and cover letters to preparing for interviews.

The advent of technology and increased use of applicant tracking systems (ATS) add another layer of complexity. Factors such as location, industry trends, and personal circumstances also contribute to the difficulty of finding a job. Despite these challenges, there is one’s persistence, skill development, networking, and adaptability that can all help job seekers navigate the job market effectively.

So what can we do to make us stand out from the rest and are we using all of our resources to do so?

Enter the Green Banner discussion.

The green banner on LinkedIn, often indicating that a user is "Open to Work," can be a significant advantage in a job search for several reasons. Firstly, it signals to recruiters and employers that you are actively seeking new opportunities, which can make your profile more visible to them. This can result in more outreach and job prospects.

Secondly, when you use the "Open to Work" feature, you can specify the types of roles and locations you're interested in, allowing you to receive more relevant job recommendations. Additionally, your connections and the broader LinkedIn community can see your job-seeking status, making it easier for them to refer you to relevant positions or share job leads. The green banner serves as a call to action for your network to offer support and connect you with potential opportunities, ultimately expediting your job search and increasing your chances of finding the right role.

Currently over 12 million members are using the #OpenToWork feature on LinkedIn, according to Feldman Daxon Partners Inc.

Here are 3 character traits I see when candidates use the Green Banner:

  1. Confidence: It’s not always easy to share with the world that you’re unemployed. Advertising this to the world on social media takes another level of confidence that to me shows a sign of someone who is not afraid to step out into the light. It’s a quality I look for in a lot of candidates — especially ones that have a people-facing role.

  2. Eager: You would only use the green banner if you wanted someone to find you. Being easy to find makes your chances of scoring an interview that much easier. By taking this step, you’re telling hiring managers that you are available and ready.

  3. Proactive: Looking for a job is no easy feat, so if you’re using all your resources then you are a step ahead of most of your competition. Being proactive in your search is something a lot of people fail to do as it is defeating sometimes to be looking for a job for an extended period of time.

Shortlisted Tips & Trends

Top 3 Holiday Hiring Trends for 2023:

Holiday hiring trends can vary year after year, but some consistent patterns emerge. Here are my top 3 trends to look out for this holiday season:

  1. Seasonal Retail Jobs: Retailers typically increase their staff during the holiday season to accommodate the surge in consumer demand. This includes hiring temporary sales associates, cashiers, stock clerks, and customer service representatives.

  2. E-commerce and Logistics: With the growing popularity of online shopping, e-commerce companies and logistics providers tend to hire a significant number of workers to manage the increased shipping and delivery demands during the holiday season. This includes roles in warehousing, order fulfillment, and delivery services.

  3. Hospitality and Events: The holiday season often brings a rise in festive events, gatherings, and travel. As a result, there's a boost in hiring for positions in the hospitality industry, including hotels, restaurants, event planning, and catering.

You can’t make this stuff up

(*Disclaimer: these are real experiences provided by RME's community of job seekers and hiring managers)

"One of my clients hired a candidate [Sam] from the UK who would be moving to the US for the job and they agreed to virtually onboard him in order to overlap with the person he was replacing. They were set for Monday at 9AM EST / 1PM GMT. On Monday at 9:15 AM I get a call from my client that Sam didn’t show and when they heard from him he said he was heading to lunch but could join as soon as he got home. They were taken aback and I was just as confused. I messaged Sam and he told me he didn’t understand why they wanted to start earlier without notice but was rushing home to jump on the call by 8:30 AM our time. 8:30? It was almost 9:30. I then figured it out. We just pushed the clocks forward for daylight savings, “spring ahead,” and he must’ve forgot! When I told him, he enlightened me that daylight savings in the UK doesn’t happen for another 2 weeks… plot twist. When I explained this to my client we all felt dumb but relieved. We apologized to Sam and had a good laugh from our lesson learned!"
