Elevating Company Culture:

The Holiday Edition

The holidays remind us of the beauty in diversity, and most companies like to share that they take pride in an inclusive culture. As we celebrate various traditions and customs, we embrace the rich tapestry of backgrounds that make teams extraordinary. It's a time to appreciate the unique perspectives each team member brings to the table, strengthening the bonds that make companies cohesive and supportive.

The holiday season is also a time of reflection and anticipation. As employees express gratitude for the moments that defined the year, itā€™s important to look ahead with optimism.

Building a positive and vibrant workplace culture during the holiday season involves fostering a sense of togetherness and celebration.

Here are 5 things you can do to get started:

  1. Encourage employees to share their diverse holiday traditions.

  2. Plan team-building activities with a festive twist or organizing holiday-themed games.

  3. Consider incorporating volunteer opportunities to give back to the community and strengthen the team's bond through shared philanthropy.

  4. Decorate the workplace with festive ornaments, and perhaps host a friendly decorating contest to boost engagement.

  5. Offer flexibility in work schedules to accommodate various holiday commitments, showing empathy for work-life balance.

According to TalentCanada in 2022, it found that 56.9% of companies planned in-person holiday parties, up from 26.6% the previous year.

However, it can be very hard to coordinate these things when you have remote staff, or an entire team that is remote. Regular virtual team gatherings, such as holiday-themed video conferences or casual online chats, provide alternative opportunities for socializing and sharing holiday experiences.

Try implementing virtual activities like a remote White Elephant or team challenges to add an element of fun and engagement. Sending personalized holiday greetings, virtual gift cards, or care packages to each team member's home helps create a sense of appreciation and connection. Finally, recognizing and celebrating team achievements, even in a virtual setting, reinforces a positive work culture and contributes to a joyful holiday season for the entire remote team.

The reason behind all of this effort is to alleviate the stresses that arenā€™t always work-related. Acknowledging the heightened pressure your colleagues may be experiencing at home and work during this season goes a long way in sustaining both productivity and spirits. Take the initiative today ā€” ask someone how they're doing, listen with compassion and empathy, and extend a helping hand if needed.

Top 3 Ways to Find a New Job During the Holiday Season

  1. Network at Holiday Events:

Leverage the festive season to expand your professional network. Attend virtual or in-person holiday events, industry gatherings, and networking mixers. Connect with professionals in your field, express your career goals, and take advantage of the positive and open atmosphere that often accompanies holiday events. Engaging with people during this time can lead to valuable connections and potential job opportunities.

  1. Utilize Seasonal Hiring Trends:

Take advantage of seasonal hiring trends that occur in various industries during the holidays. Industries such as retail, hospitality, and customer service often experience an increased demand for temporary or seasonal workers. Explore opportunities in these sectors as they may provide a foot in the door and a chance to showcase your skills, potentially leading to permanent positions.

  1. Optimize Online Presence:

Enhance your online presence and make the most of the holiday season to refresh your professional profiles. Update your LinkedIn profile, ensuring it reflects your current skills, experiences, and career aspirations. Actively engage with relevant groups and connections to stay visible in your industry. Many companies continue their recruitment efforts during the holidays, and a strong online presence can make you more discoverable to potential employers.

"Iā€™ve had my fair share of interviews with random questions, but there was one Iā€™ll never forget. The interviewer gave me a scenario about a product Iā€™d be selling in Iceland and asked how much money Iā€™d sell it for. Just want to note that I was not interviewing for a sales, marketing, or ANY finance job for that matter. So I winged it and talked through how Iā€™d sell the product and what Iā€™d do to find out how much Iā€™d sell it for but she was not pleased with my answer because she asked again how much money Iā€™d sell it for. So I said Iā€™m not sure because (full disclosure) I didnā€™t even know the currency in Iceland! I tried to be humble, you know I talked about the steps Iā€™d take to research and find out the currency exchange etc. but she just stared me down and said, ā€œI want a number.ā€ I blurted out $100 dollars and she goes ā€¦ dollars? There were 2 things I knew. Icelandā€™s currency is NOT dollars and two, I was NOT getting the job so I just said $100 Icelandic currency."
