What Makes a Great Leader?

Generating your Lead Story…

What makes a Great Leader in the workplace?

The best piece of advice I received when I stepped into a more senior role was, “Production will increase 10x if you do the simple things well. Say hi to the employees when you walk by them in the morning. You may be the only person that notices them all day.”

What does this have to do with leadership?

In order to enhance team dynamics and communication, it is key to role out a strategic initiative designed to foster collaboration and transparency within your organization. Effective communication, marked by openness, active listening, and clear expectations, forms the foundation of strong leadership. If you pair that with empathy and emotional intelligence, a good leader can create a positive work environment, fostering strong interpersonal relationships.

Leadership involves inspiring others to attain specific goals. The responsibility lies with you to determine whether the leadership leans towards positivity or negativity, and whether your emphasis is on fostering engagement or solely on output.

What 3 leadership actions could you look for in a boss?

  1. Accountability: Great leaders take ownership of both successes and failures, promoting reliability and consistency. Accountability in leadership fosters trust, transparency, and a sense of responsibility within the team, contributing to a positive and productive work environment.

  2. Strategic Thinking: This can align actions with organizational goals, ensuring long-term success through effective planning and implementation. Strategic thinking requires a leader to analyze the current situation, anticipate potential challenges and opportunities, and formulate effective strategies to navigate them.

  3. Promoting Continuous Learning: Continuous learning is a proactive approach that goes beyond traditional education and embraces various forms of learning, such as workshops, training programs, conferences, mentorship, and self-directed study. “Train people well enough so they can leave, but treat them well enough so they don’t want to,” - Richard Branson.

Remember, a good leader doesn’t just hear you, they listen.

You can’t make this stuff up

(*Disclaimer: these are real experiences provided by RME's community of job seekers and hiring managers)

"I once interviewed at a tech firm with the nicest woman, but I couldn’t focus on her questions at all because she had a HUGE, green piece of food stuck right in the middle of her front teeth. I was fighting the internal battle of whether it was more awkward to not say anything and pretend I didn’t notice it, or just come out right and let her know. I tried to ignore it for a few questions but it was clear as day and I couldn’t keep my eyes off it. So I just bit the bullet and told her as politely as I could. She seemed mortified and I felt so bad! The interview didn’t go smoothly after that and I didn’t get the job, but I still stand by my decision to tell this woman she had food in her teeth.”
