How A Person’s Character is Shaped by the Workplace

Imagine this: You make a mistake in your youth—a mistake that doesn't define who you are today. But the legal system labels you nonetheless, and your future hangs in the balance. Do you deserve a chance to prove you've changed? Can your character evolve, influenced by the people and experiences around you?

Now, picture yourself in an interview. You put on a facade, saying what you think the interviewer wants to hear. But does anyone truly know the real you after just two hours? Can they accurately assess your character in such a short time?

Join us as we explore the importance of character in the interview process and the workplace, and how true authenticity and lasting change can be revealed over time.

Character, the essence of an individual's moral fiber, is not a static trait but rather an evolving aspect shaped by life's experiences. While some may argue that character is fixed, research suggests otherwise. Indeed, character traits such as honesty, integrity, resilience, and empathy are deeply influenced by external factors, evolving over time as individuals navigate diverse environments and interact with different people.

From early childhood to adulthood, individuals are constantly exposed to various influences that shape their character. Family dynamics, cultural background, education, and social interactions all play pivotal roles in molding one's moral compass. As individuals progress through life, the experiences and challenges they encounter, both personally and professionally, further refine and reinforce their character traits.

In the workplace, fostering a positive and ethical organizational culture is paramount to nurturing desirable character traits among employees. Ethical leadership sets the tone, with leaders serving as role models for integrity, respect, and fairness. When leaders prioritize ethical behavior, they inspire and empower their teams to emulate similar values, fostering a culture of trust and accountability.

While skills can be acquired through training and practice which can be costly at times, character traits are quickly ingrained by the effort of those on your team. Organizations that prioritize hiring individuals that show potential strong character traits lay the foundation for a resilient and ethical workforce. By providing a supportive environment that encourages personal growth and development, organizations can empower employees to embody integrity, resilience, and empathy in their professional endeavours.

In conclusion, character is not static but rather a dynamic aspect of an individual's identity, evolving over time in response to life's experiences. In the workplace, cultivating a culture that values and nurtures character development is essential for building resilient and ethical teams. By investing in the growth and well-being of their employees, organizations can create a workplace environment that wins!

You can’t make this stuff up

(*Disclaimer: these are real experiences provided by RME's community of job seekers and hiring managers)

“Recently I interviewed at a company that went amazingly well…until it didn’t. The interview process lasted a few weeks, which wasn’t so bad considering I’ve once went through a 2-month-long interview process! The company had excellent communication throughout and everyone I met with seemed great. After the final round of interviews, I received a phone call a few days later with a verbal offer. I was so excited and was eagerly awaiting the written offer of employment, which they said would be in my inbox by the end of the week. Friday rolled around and instead of receiving my offer, I received an email that they went with a better candidate. Not even a phone call!
