The Most Effective Way to Prepare for an Interview

Introducing the latest edition of our newsletter, where we delve into the intricacies of interviews – a task that many find daunting, yet essential in the professional realm. Interviews serve as pivotal moments in our careers, offering opportunities for growth, advancement, and new beginnings.

However, the anticipation, pressure, and uncertainty that accompany interviews can often be overwhelming. In this issue, we explore why interviews evoke such feelings and offer strategies to navigate them effectively. Join us as we uncover the nuances of the interview process and empower you to approach it with confidence and poise.

The most effective way to prepare for an interview involves a combination 3 things: Research, self-reflection & strategic planning.

Research

Start by gaining a deep understanding of the company, its mission, values, and the specific role for which you are interviewing. Research recent news or developments within the organization to demonstrate your genuine interest and knowledge during the interview. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the industry, competitors, and any trends that may impact the company.

Self Reflection

Next, carefully review the job description and identify key skills and qualifications required. Reflect on your own experiences and achievements, drawing connections between your background and what the employer is seeking. Prepare concise, specific examples that showcase your skills and demonstrate your ability to contribute to the company's success. Anticipate common interview questions and practice your responses, focusing on articulating your strengths and addressing any potential weaknesses.

Strategic Planning

Additionally, consider the logistics of the interview, such as the format (in-person, phone, video), the names and roles of the interviewers, and any materials you may need to bring. Dress professionally, arrive early, and bring multiple copies of your resume. Finally, prepare thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer, demonstrating your interest in the position and the company. We will address how to handle the different style interviews in our next step.

You can’t make this stuff up

(*Disclaimer: these are real experiences provided by RME's community of job seekers and hiring managers)

“A few years ago I was in the last round of interviews with a prestigious company and the next day I got a call from the Hiring Manager with their decision. She proceeded to let me know that they unfortunately did not think I was the right fit for the job and I couldn’t believe it because I really thought I nailed it. I was so disappointed. It was only 2 hours later that I got a call back from the Hiring Manager to let me know that they made a huge mistake and she was mortified. Turns out the woman I was going up against in the final round had the same name as me!”
