Best Practices for Candidates to Navigate Job Boards & Career Pages:

Looking for a job online can be really confusing and overwhelming. It's like trying to find one specific thing in a huge mess of stuff! There are so many job listings and options that it's easy to feel lost and not know where to start. In this newsletter, we'll talk about why job hunting online can be tricky and give you some tips to make it easier. Whether you're new to job hunting or have been doing it for a while, understanding how to use job websites can help you find the perfect job for you. Keep reading to find out more!

Here are 6 steps to follow to make your navigation easier:

Create Targeted Profiles: Many job boards, such as Indeed and LinkedIn, allow you to create profiles with your resume and preferences. Fill out your profile completely and keep it up to date. Ideally, update it at least every 3 months. This can help you receive job recommendations tailored to your qualifications.

Research Companies: Explore the career pages of companies that you are interested in and create portfolios if they have that option. This is a great way to learn about their culture, values, and job openings. Follow them on social media as well to stay updated on their latest developments and opportunities.

Setup Job Alerts: Use the job board's alert system to receive notifications and stay informed about new job postings that match your criteria. This ensures you’ll be among the first to be notified and don’t miss out on relevant opportunities.

Build a Network: Some job boards allow you to connect with recruiters or other professionals in your industry. Networking can open doors to hidden opportunities and provide insights into the job market.

Refine your Search: Utilize the search filters on the job board to narrow down your options. You can filter by industry, location, job type, salary range, and other relevant factors.

Apply Strategically: Carefully review job descriptions and requirements before applying. Tailor your application to each position, emphasizing how your skills match its requirements. My suggestion is that you should meet 80% of the requirements (*can vary by industry).

You can’t make this stuff up

(*Disclaimer: these are real experiences provided by RME's community of job seekers and hiring managers)

“A few months ago I was heading to my interview and got stuck in the worst traffic of my life! I left my house 20 minutes early with the intention of arriving early but of course my luck it was bumper to bumper. When it got to a complete standstill I panicked because I knew I was not just going to be late, I was going to miss my interview entirely. I called the Hiring Manager (through bluetooth of course) to let them know. Lo and behold she let me know that she just emailed me to see if I could reschedule for the afternoon because the person I was interviewing with was stuck in the same traffic. Thankfully I was able to interview a bit later in the day and was offered the job on the spot. You can imagine how great my drive home was in comparison!”
