Understanding Quiet Firing and How Employees Can Protect Themselves

In today's workplace, the term "quiet firing" is becoming increasingly common. Unlike traditional layoffs or terminations, quiet firing is a more subtle and insidious method of pushing employees out. This tactic involves creating an environment where employees feel undervalued, marginalized, or so frustrated that they voluntarily leave their jobs. Here, we explore what quiet firing entails and how employees can protect themselves from falling victim to this trend.

What is Quiet Firing?

Quiet firing occurs when employers deliberately make work conditions unfavourable, hoping employees will resign. This can manifest in various ways, including:

  • Reduced Responsibilities: Employees may find their roles and responsibilities gradually diminished, leading to boredom and a lack of engagement.

  • Isolation: Being left out of important meetings, decisions, or social activities can create a sense of exclusion.

  • Unattainable Goals: Setting impossible targets or deadlines can set employees up for failure, damaging their confidence and professional reputation.

  • Lack of Recognition: Consistently overlooking an employee's contributions can erode their sense of worth and motivation.

  • Inadequate Support: Failing to provide necessary resources or support can make job performance difficult and stressful.

These tactics can lead to frustration, decreased morale, and ultimately, voluntary resignation.

How Employees Can Protect Themselves

While quiet firing can be challenging to address due to its subtle nature, there are proactive steps employees can take to protect themselves:

  • Document Everything: Keep detailed records of your work, accomplishments, and any instances of unfair treatment. This documentation can be invaluable if you need to support your case for unfair treatment or seek new opportunities.

  • Seek Feedback: Regularly ask for constructive feedback on your performance. This not only shows your commitment to improvement but also provides a record of your performance evaluations.

  • Communicate Openly: If you notice signs of quiet firing, have a candid discussion with your manager. Express your concerns and seek clarity on your role and expectations.

  • Build a Support Network: Cultivate relationships with colleagues and mentors who can provide support and advice. A strong network can offer perspective and help you navigate difficult situations.

  • Know Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with your company's HR policies and your rights as an employee. If necessary, seek advice from an employment lawyer or union representative.

  • Enhance Your Skills: Invest in professional development to keep your skills sharp and increase your value to the organization. This can also make you more attractive to potential employers.

  • Explore Options: Stay open to new job opportunities. Keeping your resume updated and maintaining a presence on professional networking sites like LinkedIn can help you quickly transition if necessary.

  • Stay Positive: Maintaining a positive attitude and professional demeanor can help you manage stress and keep your morale high, even in challenging situations.

Quiet firing is a subtle yet pervasive issue in modern workplaces. By recognizing the signs and taking proactive steps to protect themselves, employees can mitigate the impact and maintain their professional well-being. Staying informed, connected, and prepared are key strategies for navigating and overcoming the challenges of quiet firing.

(*Disclaimer: these are real experiences provided by RME's community of job seekers and hiring managers)

“This might have been the worst interview experience I ever had. I made it to the final round and they told me to expect to hear from them with a decision by the following week. Well instead of hearing from them, I heard from my current employer asking me when I was going to tell them about my new job. I was mortified the company I interviewed with had done my reference checks with no heads up and before I received their offer, but deep down I was excited that this meant I got the job. Nope! Turns out when I reached out to the hiring manager for clarification she told me they went with a different candidate and that although my reference checks were good, it did not mean I was offered the job. So yeah, my potential future employer almost got me fired from my current employer.”
