100,000 Federal Employees Step Out: What It Means for the Job Market

Effective yesterday, September 30, more than 100,000 U.S. federal employees will officially leave their posts under the government’s deferred resignation program.

For many, this is a long-planned exit strategy. Some will retire outright, while others may take a pause before re-entering the private sector. With eight months of compensation and health benefits included in their packages, many have the flexibility to take time before making their next move.

But make no mistake: a crowded job market is about to get even more crowded.

What This Means for Job Seekers

Timing matters. Those who delay entering the market will create waves later in the year, potentially tightening competition just as companies set 2026 budgets.

Expect a surge in experienced professionals. Many of these employees bring decades of government service — project management, compliance, operations, and leadership skills that translate well to the private sector.

Recruiters will see more volume. More résumés, more outreach, and more competition for attention. Standing out will require sharper strategies and clearer positioning.
