The Biggest Thing People Forget About Recruiters

One of the most common misunderstandings I see online especially from frustrated job seekers is the belief that recruiters are the ones doing the hiring.

Let’s clear that up right now: Recruiters don’t hire. We don’t pick the salaries. We don’t decide who gets the offer.

We’re the bridge between two sides connecting candidates with companies, and trying to make that relationship work as smoothly as possible. We guide the process, advocate for both parties, and keep things moving. But at the end of the day, we don’t control the final decision.

And yet, recruiters often become the lightning rod for everyone’s frustration.

If you’ve been job searching, you’ve probably said (or thought): “They never called me back.” “They ghosted me.” “They didn’t tell me why I wasn’t chosen.”

And honestly I get it because sometimes, that frustration is completely justified.

There are recruiters who vanish after an interview. There are recruiters who don’t follow up, who make promises they don’t keep, and who forget that behind every resume is a human being trying to build a life. That’s not hiring — that’s bad practice. And it gives the entire profession a bad reputation.

But here’s the other side that most people never see. Recruiters are often caught in the middle of slow-moving organizations, indecisive hiring managers, or budgets that change without notice. We’re chasing feedback that’s overdue by two weeks, juggling 40 open roles, and trying to keep candidates informed without updates to give.

That doesn’t excuse poor communication, but it does explain why so many good recruiters burn out trying to do their jobs well in systems that aren’t built for speed.

So let’s call out both sides with fairness.

Job seekers: your frustration is valid. The process is often broken, inconsistent, and emotionally draining. Just remember that the recruiter you’re messaging likely doesn’t hold the final say — they’re your translator and your advocate inside the company.

Recruiters: do better. Every candidate deserves an update, even if that update is “no update yet.” It takes thirty seconds and it builds trust — the kind that separates a transactional recruiter from a trusted professional.

At the end of the day, recruiting is about people. Not systems, not pipelines, not requisitions.

And while we may not make the final decision, we do shape the experience. We can’t always change the outcome, but we can control how we communicate along the way.
