The LinkedIn Visibility Hack Almost No One Uses (But It Works)

Most people approach LinkedIn the wrong way. They identify someone they want to connect with — a hiring manager, recruiter, founder, or industry leader and immediately send a cold message.

Something like:

“Hi, I came across your profile and would love to connect. I’m currently exploring opportunities…”

The problem? That person has likely received dozens of messages just like it this week. The message feels transactional. And most of the time, it gets ignored. There’s a better way. And it’s surprisingly simple. Instead of starting with a message, start with attention and familiarity.

Here’s the process:

First, visit their profile or company page and spend a few minutes scanning it. Look at what they post about, what they care about, and what conversations they participate in. Next, engage thoughtfully with their content. Not just a like. Leave a real comment that adds something to the discussion.

For example, imagine a hiring manager posts about the challenges of finding strong product managers. Most people will like the post and move on. A better comment might be something like:

“I’ve been seeing this as well. Many companies are looking for product managers who can operate cross-functionally with engineering and marketing, but candidates often come from very siloed environments. Curious if you’re seeing the same challenge?”

Now you’ve done something different. You didn’t ask for anything. You contributed to the conversation. And this is where LinkedIn’s algorithm starts working in your favor.

LinkedIn rewards proximity and interaction

When you engage with someone’s content, LinkedIn assumes there is some level of relevance between the two of you. That increases the likelihood that your content appears in their feed shortly afterward. So when you post something insightful the next day, there’s a good chance they will see it.

Instead of asking for attention…

You’ve created familiarity. And familiarity lowers people’s guard. The next time your name appears in their notifications, it’s not coming from a stranger. It’s coming from someone who added value to a conversation they care about. This is the core principle behind social selling.

Visibility on LinkedIn isn’t random

It’s strategic. The people who build strong networks don’t rely on cold outreach alone. They warm the room first. Over time, this approach compounds. A hiring manager sees your thoughtful comment today. Tomorrow they see your post about hiring trends in their industry. A week later they notice another comment you left on a mutual connection’s post. Suddenly, when you send a message or connection request, it feels different. They already recognize your name. You’re no longer a stranger trying to get their attention. You’re someone who has already been part of their professional conversation. If you want to try this yourself, here’s a simple exercise for the week.

Identify three people you genuinely respect in your industry

This could be a recruiter, a hiring manager, a founder, or someone doing work you admire. Spend five minutes reviewing their recent posts. Leave a thoughtful comment that contributes to the discussion. Then the next day, publish something valuable of your own — a lesson, an observation, or insight from your work. You may be surprised how often those same people see your post and engage with it.

That’s how visibility grows on LinkedIn. Not by shouting louder. But by participating in the right conversations first.

You can’t make this stuff up
