Generating your Lead Story…

If You Want to Stand Out in Your Job Search, Stop Applying More—Start Leaving Breadcrumbs

Most job seekers are running the same playbook: apply, wait, follow up, and hope for a response. The problem is, that approach puts you in a sea of identical candidates—all competing for attention in the same way.

If you actually want to stand out, you need to do something different.

You need to leave breadcrumbs.

What that means is simple: before you ever apply, you make yourself visible. You follow the company, connect with people inside it, and—most importantly—engage with their content in a thoughtful way. Not randomly, but intentionally.

There’s a psychological principle at play here. It typically takes just two or three touchpoints for someone to begin recognizing your name. And recognition is powerful. It builds familiarity, and familiarity builds trust. By the time you apply, you’re no longer just another applicant—you’re someone they’ve already seen.

The Bar Is Lower Than You Think

Take a look at Salesforce’s company page. With millions of followers, you’d expect every post to be flooded with meaningful engagement. In reality, most posts receive very little thoughtful interaction—often just a handful of comments that add any real value.

That’s the opportunity.

The vast majority of people are passive. They scroll, they consume, and they move on. Very few take the extra step to contribute something meaningful. If you do, you stand out immediately.

The same pattern shows up across companies like HubSpot, Shopify, and Amazon. Massive audiences, but very little high-quality engagement. The bar isn’t just low—it’s almost nonexistent.

Where This Really Works: Personal Pages

While company pages are a great starting point, the real leverage comes from engaging with individuals—especially those involved in hiring. Talent acquisition leaders, HR professionals, and hiring managers are all actively posting, sharing insights, and engaging with their networks.

This is where most hiring decisions are influenced.

When you consistently show up in the comments of their posts with thoughtful input, you start to build visibility in a way that feels natural. You’re not pitching yourself. You’re not asking for anything. You’re simply contributing to the conversation.

And that’s what makes it effective.

What Good Engagement Actually Looks Like

Most people get this part wrong. They leave generic comments like “Great post” or “Thanks for sharing,” which do nothing to differentiate them.

What works is adding perspective.

That could mean building on someone’s idea, offering a quick insight from your own experience, or asking a thoughtful question that moves the conversation forward. Even a short, well-articulated response can be enough to trigger curiosity—and that curiosity often leads to a profile view.

That’s the goal.

Turning Visibility Into Opportunity

When you leave two or three high-quality “breadcrumbs” over the course of a week, something subtle but important happens. Your name becomes familiar. The next time that person sees you—whether in their notifications, their feed, or their applicant pool—you’re no longer a stranger.

And that changes how they perceive you.

By the time you apply or reach out directly, you’ve already established a level of credibility that most candidates never achieve. You’ve shifted from being cold outreach to warm recognition.

A Simple Playbook

Start by identifying a small group of companies you’re genuinely interested in. Follow their pages, engage with a few posts each week, and spend time interacting with content from people inside the organization.

Do this consistently for a week or two before applying.

It doesn’t require a massive time investment, but it does require intention. Standing out in today’s job market isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing things differently.

Most candidates focus entirely on the application. The ones who get noticed focus on visibility before the application ever happens.

Because in the end, opportunities don’t just come from being qualified.

They come from being recognized.

You can’t make this stuff up

“Hi Matthew! Both interviews went well. I definitely nailed the second one, which I am more interested in anyway. I answered every question, gave detailed answers, and examples, and they were genuinely smiling and nodding. And we talked shop about our industry, so I can't see how they couldn't see me in the role. I described the role as project manager, data guru, and stars expert all rolled into one, and that certainly describes me. They said they want to move fast on this and didn't mention many, if any, other rounds. So, fingers crossed!”
