Want Bigger Job Offers? Master the Art of Interviewing

In today’s competitive job market, the ability to interview well is not just an advantage; it’s a critical skill that can significantly impact the size and quality of job offers you receive. While a polished resume and relevant experience can open doors, it’s the interview process that often determines whether you walk through those doors to a better salary, more responsibilities, and a position that aligns with your career goals.

Making a first impression

First impressions during an interview are pivotal. Employers make quick judgments based on your communication style, body language, and the clarity of your answers. A candidate who presents themselves confidently, articulates their thoughts clearly, and demonstrates enthusiasm for the role is more likely to stand out. These qualities not only make you memorable but also signal to employers that you are capable and ready to take on challenges, which can lead to more generous job offers.

Using the STAR Method

Beyond first impressions, the substance of your responses during an interview is equally important. Candidates who can effectively communicate their past experiences using the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method tend to be more successful. This method allows you to showcase your problem-solving abilities, leadership skills, and results-oriented mindset, all of which are highly valued by employers. By demonstrating how you’ve added value in previous roles, you make a compelling case for why you deserve a higher salary or more senior position.

Going on the offence by asking the right questions

Another critical aspect of interviewing is your ability to ask insightful questions. Employers are not just assessing your answers; they are also gauging your interest in the company and the role. Asking thoughtful questions about the company’s culture, future projects, or expectations shows that you’re serious about finding the right fit. This can often lead to deeper conversations that highlight your potential as a long-term asset, which may result in better compensation and more enticing offers.

For example:

Hiring Manager: What are your strengths?

Candidate: That's a good question and I would love to formulate my answer around this particular role. Can you tell me briefly what is the first project I would expect to take on?

The hiring manager will answer and once they've done that you are all set up to then answer the question as targeted as possible.

Negotiating 101

Finally, negotiation often begins during the interview itself. Your ability to communicate your worth and negotiate effectively can lead to significantly better offers. When you’ve impressed an employer with your interview performance, you’re in a stronger position to negotiate salary, benefits, and other perks. Interviewing well sets the stage for these discussions, giving you the leverage you need to secure a more favorable package.

In conclusion, great interviewing skills are more than just a tool for landing a job; they are a gateway to bigger and better offers. By mastering the art of interviewing, you not only increase your chances of getting hired but also position yourself to receive offers that truly reflect your worth and potential. Whether you’re looking for a higher salary, better benefits, or a role that aligns more closely with your career aspirations, honing your interview skills is the key to unlocking these opportunities.

This week we’re sharing a positive update from one of our clients after using our Interview Prep services:

“A client just called to tell me she received an offer today for $30,000 more than she was making, plus a 40% bonus. I love this kind of news. In the last 2 weeks I’ve helped clients secure $30k, $50k and $70k more in salary with simple interview prep. I always say the smallest changes yield the largest rewards.”
