The 3 E’s of Networking: How I’d Approach Job Hunting Today

When it comes to job hunting, the days of relying solely on applications submitted through job boards are long gone. The most successful job seekers know that networking is not just helpful—it’s essential. If I were looking for a new job today, I’d focus on a strategy I call the 3 E’s of Networking: Exhaust, Expand, and Engage.

This framework isn’t just about collecting connections; it’s about leveraging your network strategically and building relationships that lead to real opportunities. Here’s how I’d break it down and put it into action:

1. Exhaust Your Current Network

The first step in any job search should be to maximize the potential of the network you already have. Too often, people jump straight into applying for roles at unfamiliar companies when their best opportunities might be just one conversation away.

What does “exhaust” mean?

  • Start by reaching out to your family, friends, former colleagues, and even casual acquaintances. Let them know you’re exploring opportunities and what kind of role or industry you’re targeting.

  • Be specific in your ask. For example, instead of saying, “I’m looking for a job,” say, “I’m looking for a role in marketing at mid-sized tech companies.” This helps your network make targeted suggestions or referrals.

  • Don’t underestimate casual connections—sometimes your loose ties can connect you with people you’d never have met otherwise.

Why it works:
People in your immediate network already trust you. When they refer you to someone, they’re vouching for your character and skills, which can give you a significant edge over other candidates. Referrals also often bypass the applicant tracking system, getting you directly in front of decision-makers.

2. Expand Your Network

While your current network is a great starting point, it’s likely not enough to cover all potential opportunities. That’s where expanding your connections comes in.

How do you expand effectively?

  • Set a weekly goal: Aim to add up to 100 new connections on LinkedIn each week, focusing on people in your industry, at target companies, or with similar roles to the one you’re seeking.

  • Personalize your invitations: Instead of sending generic connection requests, write a brief message explaining why you’d like to connect. For example:
“Hi [Name], I’m impressed by your work in [industry/role] and would love to connect and learn from your experience.”

  • Leverage shared connections: Ask mutual connections to introduce you to people who can offer insights or advice.

Why it matters:
Networking isn’t just about quantity—it’s about building meaningful relationships. By connecting with the right people, you increase the likelihood of uncovering hidden job opportunities, gaining insider information, and staying updated on industry trends.

3. Engage Consistently

Once you’ve built a network, the real work begins. Networking isn’t a one-and-done activity; it requires ongoing effort to maintain and strengthen relationships. This is where engagement comes into play.

How do you engage effectively?

  • Stay active on LinkedIn: Post regularly, share industry news, or comment thoughtfully on posts from your connections. This keeps you visible and showcases your expertise.

  • Offer value to others: Share helpful articles, insights, or tools relevant to your field. Networking is a two-way street, and people are more likely to help you if you’ve already provided value to them.

  • Follow up: If someone helps you—whether it’s through advice, a referral, or an introduction—thank them and keep them updated on your progress. Gratitude goes a long way in building lasting relationships.

Why it’s powerful:
Engagement keeps you top of mind. When opportunities arise, people are more likely to think of you if you’ve been active in their network and demonstrated your expertise.

Remember, people hire people they know, like, and trust. By building a strong network and nurturing it, you’ll not only find your next job—you’ll set yourself up for long-term career success.

You can’t make this stuff up

(*Disclaimer: these are real experiences provided by RME's community of job seekers and hiring managers)

I was stuck in the endless loop of job applications and rejections, feeling like my resume was vanishing into a void. But one night while scrolling LinkedIn I saw a hiring manager at a company I admired (whom we’ll call Alex) had commented on a post about innovation in their industry. I was inspired to comment based on previous content you had shared about engaging on LinkedIn, so I crafted a personalized message which read: "Hi Alex, I saw your comment on a post, and it really resonated with me. I’d love to learn more about your perspective on the topic. By the way, your company’s work on a similar project is incredible—I'd be thrilled to contribute to something like that one day." Alex replied the next day and our conversation quickly turned into a virtual coffee chat and a week later he forwarded my resume to their team. By the end of the month, I landed the role! That referral wasn’t just about luck—it was about me making a genuine connection, showcasing my value, and putting myself out there thanks to the boost of confidence from your content. Thank you, Matthew!”
